Walk The Dog
The Spiral Spook is a topwater walk-the-dog fly that cuts sharply side to side with the classic “spook” action that drives fish wild. It is an excellent choice for any species that feed on baitfish on the surface. This fly does take some skill to work properly, so make sure to practice the cadence, try slower and faster strips until you see what gets the fly working side to side the best. Use a loop knot, and monofilament/nylon tippet.
The softer or more supple your tippet is, the better they will walk side to side. Using very short, sharp strips is the real key to getting the best action.
To fish this fly, use a loop knot and a floating weight forward fly line, preferably with a short taper. Use supple monofilament or nylon tippet, and do short, sharp 1-2″ strips with your fly rod tip just barely touching the waters surface to prevent the fly line from swinging back and forth.
