Drew Chicone's Favorite Utility Patterns for Belize

In Drew Chicone’s book titled “Belize Flies” Chicones says the Tide Slave is one of his favorite utility patterns for Belize. According to Chicone, although there is “widespread assumption” that permit eat exclusively crabs they also eat shrimp, worms, bivalves, and other critters. The Tide Slave was designed to represent many of these food sources, but Chicone believes it best imitates a mantis shrimp. This fly is known to take permit but also big bonefish, tarpon, snook and others will come to this fly.

We love this fly for its versatility and big profile when not sure exactly what the food source is. This can easily be mistaken for a crab, a shrimp, or even a baitfish if it is moved correctly.
