The Winston Pure 2: The Dry Fly Rod That We Have Been Waiting For

When fly fishing, there is a combination of skill, patience, connection with nature and precision.
Over the years, rod designers and rod companies have spent an infinite amount of time to refine these elements. What if I told you there is a rod that can enhance those elements and elevate the entire experience? Oh boy, do I have news for you. On the 16th of September 2024, Winston is launching the newest and truest dry fly rod, The Winston Pure 2.

We, at The House of Fly, were lucky enough to have the recent opportunity to cast The Pure 2 at the Winston Rod factory in Twin Bridges, Montana. During our visit, we learned of the rich 90-year history of Winston and the meticulous production process behind crafting American-made rods. I even treated myself to a one-of-a-kind Air 2 Max, my new mousing rod. The day was filled with education, “aaahhhh” moments (moments of realization), and laughter, but the ultimate highlight was undoubtedly the Pure 2. Want to see more on our visit to Winston? Check it out here.
WINSTON HAS ALWAYS BEEN IDENTIFIED BY THEIR CRAFTSMANSHIP, BUT THE INTRODUCTION OF THE PURE 2 MARKS A SIGNIFICANT SHIFT.
With Hank, the new engineer in the driver’s seat, this rod carries a blend of innovation and traditional craftsmanship. Pure 2’s are made with the new Nano Particle carbon blanks. Which has made their rods stronger, physically lighter, and heightens the rod’s core values. A reassuring shift that Winston isn’t sitting idle and that they are constantly looking for new technology. Hank is revolutionizing Winston with the Air 2 Max and the Pure 2 rod designs- two new series that offer consistency through their entire line up. Having been fortunate enough to test this rod prior to its official launch, I have to say that the hard work and dedication from Hank and the Winston team have truly paid off, resulting in something special.

SO, WHAT HAS CHANGED FROM PURE TO PURE 2?
The Pure 2 has Increased strength by 24%, thinner blank walls for more feel and it is physically lighter. The Pure 2 has a burled box elder reel seat that are gorgeous and unique with every rod. There are two new sizes, the 7’9” and the 8’3” lengths. Both are crafted to be the ideal rod lengths for dry fly applications. The Pure 2’s have a completely flawless finish and are everything you expect from R.L. Winston. Its casting stroke is smooth & consistent from tip to grip.
These two unique rod lengths remind me of the Echo Eight Four- B rod that was designed by Tim Rajeff and the Pike Booster by Loop. Although these rods are for pike and bass, Winston applied a similar attack on dry fly fishing with The Pure 2. All are badass rods that focus on rod length to weight ratio for specific occasions.
The Pure 2 isn’t just a rod, or even a tool, it’s an extension of the angler. With a soft tip that provides just the right amount of flex, you can feel the rod flex all the way to the handle. This sensitivity allows for a delicate presentation, perfect for those who thrive on the subtle art of dry fly fishing.

This rod was not designed like the Air 2, it was designed to be exclusively a dry fly rod. The mid-2nd and mid-3rd sections of the rod are soft but possess a hidden strength, providing enough power to throw small to medium-sized bugs, including hoppers, with precision. It’s a balance area that’s difficult to achieve, yet the Pure 2 manages it effortlessly.
My first test of the Pure 2 happened to be on a particularly windy day, enough wind to challenge any rod. With an 8’ 3”, 4wt rod in hand, I was left speechless as I casted 60 ft with ease. During the rod demo, a UPS truck passed behind me during my back cast and it caused me to lose the load in the rod. With a simple haul on the forward cast, the Pure 2 demonstrated its strength by recovering smoothly. This is a rod that won’t let you down, even in less-than-ideal conditions.

Most fly rods nowadays seem to be fast, extra fast or “exttraaaaa” fast but for those who live for the purest form of fly fishing, the Winston Pure 2 is set up to become your new best friend. It’s a rod that creates the delicate balance, offering an experience that feels both familiar and refreshingly new.
At The House of Fly, we believe that the Pure 2 is more than just a dedicated dry fly rod for those late summer trico hatches. It’s a companion, ready to handle a range of fishing situations. To make the most of The Pure 2, start with your fishing environment. Will most fishing adventures with the Pure 2 be from a boat or wading, large river, or small creek? Think about how you’ll use the rod and choose the right line to match. If you know your spot needs some distance and accuracy while wading, pair it with the Lazer 57 Dry Fly line by Ballistic. If you plan on floating and slapping a hopper behind every pocket you find, consider a little more aggressive taper like the MPX taper by Scientific Anglers. While the Pure 2 is designed with dry fly fishing in mind, the reel can easily be swapped. And if you find yourself on the water in early spring, when the water is too chilly for a caddis hatch and the Pure 2 is your only option, don’t hesitate to throw a bobber on that thing. Don’t tell anyone though, it’s our little secret.
