Project in the Wild- Fly Fishing Challenge

Do you need an expensive Fly Rod?

What is expensive? Depends on who you’re talking to. I know anglers that say there is no point of fishing if you’re not using the right tool. To them, that tool is $1000 plus. Does the average Troutbum catch more fish than the guy decked out in PataGUCCI? There are also people that have no idea where to start. What is a good price baseline?

I’ll tell you. If you’re starting off, try a friend’s rod. You may not like fly fishing. If you do, buy a fly rod. If your budget doesn’t fit a Winston, don’t buy a Winston. I am sure you can find an Eagleclaw fiberglass rod at a neighborhood garage sale near you. In fact, Project in the Wild #11, Trent and Cooper went to Walmart with a $50 spending limit. They all fish.

Trent and Cooper explore some local Bozeman waters and show that money is not needed to fly fish. Cooper and Trent buy the Walmart “specials”. Fly fisherman’s initial reaction (not all) is usually negative. If you want to be a good angler, it doesn’t matter the rod. You got it.
